I assume so, but 'serial' could also be used to describe a USB (Universal SERIAL Bus) mouse.
And that will NOT work in DOS, since DOS doesn't support USB devices unless you're using a specialized driver (Google 'DOSUSB' if you need that driver). The serial mouse is the 9 pin connector type.

For example, F8 03 F8 02 00 00 00 00 means that it found two COM ports, the first has the I/O address of 03F8 and the second is 02F8. Another thing you could try to confirm your OS configuration is okay is to simply boot the hard drive from this computer on the other machine that you know works with the serial mouse. If all works well, then you'll know for certain this is a hardware issue with the machine and not a configuration issue. 2 cents worth.
There were at least 3 different pinouts on motherboard serial connectors for motherboards in that time frame and you do need to have a matching female connector and port/bracket. The driver will load since it is based on the motherboard connector. There's usually no good way to tell which is what regarding connectors. I always tested with a loopback plug and test software to ensure the correct adapter was installed when using an adapter that did not come with the motherboard. Glad those days are over. It was a pain in the butt!

Well, my Floppy Disk Controller Card came in the post today (it has a serial port attached). I got myself an ISA Socket card to ensure that it would fit with a wide range of motherboards from the 486/Pentium era and.little drum roll. the mouse now works!First, I disabled the serial ports in the BIOS as was suggested, then I ran the debug command to see if all zeros were displayed and they were. Then I installed the card and booted up. Initially I received the error: Floppy disk resource conflict.
However, after changing a jumper on the card I no longer get this error and everything is currently working fine!Thank you all so much for your help!
